The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Is Sending Maomao Somewhere New

The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Cour 1 premiered in October 2026 on Crunchyroll, produced once again by OLM and TOHO Animation. The season is splitting into two cours rather than airing straight through — Cour 2 isn't landing until April 2027 — a deliberate pacing choice the production has said is meant to protect quality rather than rush the back half out the door.

The bigger change is where the story is actually going. After two seasons built almost entirely around palace-bound mysteries — poisonings, rumors, and political maneuvering inside a fixed cast of suspects — Season 3 sends Maomao and Jinshi outside the palace on a mission to a distant land connected to Empress Gyokuyou's homeland. It's the first time the show has left its core setting for an extended stretch rather than a short detour.

That's a bigger structural swing than it might sound like. The apothecary-detective format that made the first two seasons work depended on a closed environment — a fixed cast, fixed politics, and a palace layout the show could keep returning to for new angles on old intrigue. Moving the setting outside those walls changes the show's basic engine. It could be exactly the reinvention the series needs to avoid repeating itself; it could also lose some of what made the palace mysteries so tightly constructed. Cour 1 is the test case.

The franchise is clearly betting on the momentum regardless — alongside Cour 1, a new anime movie with an original story (not a direct adaptation of the novels) is scheduled for December 2026, putting two releases in front of audiences within a few months of each other.

No new main cast changes have been announced heading into Cour 1, so expect familiar voices carrying the story into unfamiliar territory, with new characters introduced as the new setting gets established.
